Before you decide, please take a look at charityrallies.org. This non-profit was formed by former Mongol Rally participants in response to The Adventurists becoming a for-profit entity. Some of the Trustees are legends of the Mongol Rally, notably Harry and Archie, who had the most legendary story in the history of the MR. That should tell you something.
You'll also feel better knowing that all of your fund raising efforts will go to charity, and your entry fee will not go to lining someone's pocket.
It is and it isn't - need to be balanced on it i think. Benefits are greater going with MR if from the UK - they provide advice and take on the visas, also because it is their jobs they can offer more - they have more time to offer teams. It is unrealistic to think that people can organise something of the size of the Mr and hold down a seperate job. The UK visa service MR provide takes away a lot of the hassle. They are also most established whereas charityrallies is finding its feet - so the dates, launches and parties are going to happen for sure with MR. Secondly although Charity rallies is indeed charitable so is MR. Perception is that most of the people doing CR are because they failed to register with MR - sour grapes effectively - but CR is at least providing a service for the extra demand. I think CR is trying to bash MR and encouraging teams to do so, effectively trying to get them included in a personal dispute between the two founders - for that reason I don't think CH is as positive as MR. The reasons behind CR perhaps go beyond simply being a not for profit org and rather go back to a more personal level. I think its better not mud slinging. You'll find CR teams doing it - like Fel Cruz, but not MR teams about CH - essentially because they are not the underdogs. Either organisation are doing something admirable and raising sums for charity,so it would be a lot more healthy for CR and teams to accept that and focus on the planning of their rally that joining a cause, of which they probably don't know all the facts.
The MR isn't charitable, the founders decided to cash in on it when it got big having got help from all the teams to build it up as a not-profit. Not very honourable thing to do. The teams that did it in 2007 said it was a rip off, with nothing for the money. The visas the MR offered were just the same as you get queuing up yourself, but at an extra charge! Have a read of the forum for one of the 2007 teams http://www.mongolianrally.co.uk/ and the mud slinging is all from 2007 teams not the founders!
Well I can only speak for myself but I did do Mongol Rally 2007 and I'm not being quoted here. What I can say is that some of he most vocal people who complained then went and signed up for the 2008, at the increased price....so what does that say? I can see your points but they offer two different things and mud slinging should be kept out of it.
I agree, charityrallies seems to be the better opition. They allow to take any sort of car, gives you the chance to have a look around these countries without worrying about the state your cars in
