"I know Kung Fu", well a little bit. Not up to the Matrix standards yet.
Yesterday evening got a two hour Kung Fu lesson from a local master in the park.
Having done a fair bit of play marital arts doing a lot of Les Mills Body Combat classes, probably getting over a 1000 now, I had a bit of an idea how to move... (as much as you can get in a marital arts based fitness class).
Of course in a single two hours lesson you can only cover the very basics...
After short warm up, run through the five basic grounded stances, and three hand striking techniques.
There it was on to learning some basic forms, a movement pattern of 20 moves. We spent about an hour covering 1-10, slowly building the forms up.
As the Master ran through teaching each form, he covered explaining the sorts of attacks the forms were intended to defend against.
A lot of the time was spent preaching the Jing and Jang of Kung Fu. Using both internal and external moves. Instead of just attacking (external), bringing the opponent off balance with an internal move then attacking. Achieving both Jing and Jang.
11-20 was covered pretty quickly as they were the same as the first ten, just opposites for left and right.
By the time of starting 11-20, I'd built a crowd of half a dozen local in lookers. Either I was the next Bruce Lee, or more likely they were amused by so e Westerner attempting to perform some basic forms.
My audience included a couple of young kids of about eight that decided to join in the practicing of forms.
For the last 30 or so minutes, the time was spent drilling and improving the 20 forms. Coming form winter and now in a hot humid climate, I was wet with sweat to the point I'm sure I looked like a drowned rat and had just spent an hour in heavy rain.
Maybe I'll have to keep up some lessons and see if I improve...
This afternoon is off to Hong Kong. At last no a bus (well only a short one), instead an overnight sleeper train. Been ages since I last took a sleeper train, a great way of getting around...
